Industrial output up by 0.5% y-o-y in August


Industrial output rose by 0.5% y-o-y in August, a deceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The figure is lower than market expectations, which were for an increase of 1.9% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2011, output was up in 19 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest increase was noted in manufacturing (up by 0.7% y-o-y), followed by water supply, waste management and remediation activities (up by 0.6% y-o-y), and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (up by 0.1% y-o-y). By contrast, in mining-quarrying production declined by 5% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, production of chemicals and chemical products rose by 10.5% y-o-y, output in the machinery and equipment sector increased by 6.8% y-o-y, in the category of paper and paper products it was up by 5.6% y-o-y, in foodstuffs by 4.8% y-o-y, in computers, electronic and optical products by 4.5% y-o-y, and in metal products by 3.8% y-o-y. On the other hand, output in the category of coke and refined petroleum products declined by 12.3% y-o-y, in pharmaceuticals by 9.1% y-o-y, in cars, trailers and semi-trailers by 8.3% y-o-y, in furniture by 7.1% y-o-y, and in other non-metallic mineral products and in metal products by 5.6% y-o-y.

In January-August industrial output rose by 3.5% y-o-y.
