Pilkington opens second plant in Poland

Pilkington Automotive, the global maker of automotive glazing products, on 14 September officially inaugurated the first phase of a new manufacturing complex in Chmielow (Podkarpackie voivodship), in the Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone (TSSE). The total value of the project – whose construction commenced in September 2011 – is PLN 450m (€111m).

The Chmielow plant will make about two million windscreens and five million side and rear windows for passenger car makers and brands such as General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen or Fiat, and truck makers MAN, DAF, Mercedes and Volvo when it reaches full operating capacity in 2014, thus doubling Pilkintgon Automotive’s output in Poland. Some 70% of the output is to be exported. At present the factory makes windscreens and employs over 150 people, with the number to rise to 250 by the end of the year. In the second phase, to be executed during 2013-2014, its production capacity will be expanded to include rear and side windows, with staff levels to reach about 500 in 2014, including employed by 150 suppliers.

Also on 14 September Pilkington inaugurated a 35,000 m2 warehousing hall on the Chmielow site where assembly of additional parts will also take place.

Chmielow is Pilkington’s second factory in Poland, after the one in Sandomierz (Swietokrzyskie), which makes windows for passenger cars only. It won the project against competition from locations in Romania and China.
