ArcelorMittal investing €58m in Poland

2012-09-14

ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company, has approved plans to invest a total of €58m until the end of 2013 in expanding and modernising its mills in Poland.

The centerpiece of the investment programme is a €36m project to build a new production line for making 120-metre rails at its Dabrowa Gornicza plant. At present the company is making 30-metre rails, and the new line is seen as crucial for sustaining and strengthening its market share. The project, which had to be put on hold in 2011 due to tough financing and macroeconomic conditions in Europe, is scheduled to be completed in December 2013.

Also next year the group will commission a sheet piles service centre with an annual capacity of 85,000 tons, in response to high market demand for new types of piles.

The investment programme also includes a €14m revamp of the basic oxygen furnace in Dabrowa Gornicza and a modernisation of the hot dip galvanised (HDG) line in Swietochlowice.

In the words of Manfred Van Vlierberghe, CEO of ArcelorMittal Poland, the fact that the Investment Approval Committee approved these four projects in a very difficult economic context clearly shows the confidence in our Polish operations as key assets in the group.
