German measurement instruments maker to build second plant in Poland

Wika, a leading global manufacturer of pressure, temperature and level measurement instrumentation, plans to build a second production facility in Poland in a project worth PLN 80m (approx. €19.6m) and expected to create 280 jobs, Gazeta Wyborcza reported.

The German firm, which already owns a factory of pressure measuring instruments in Wloclawek (Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship), has selected nearby Kowal as the location for a new plant making manometers from acid-resistant steel, as well as some component parts. The proposed facility would also include a distribution centre. However, the fate of the project depends on whether the government gives its consent to making the targeted 10.6-hectare area in Kowal part of the Lodz Special Economic Zone. The company’s application mentions PLN 80m and 280 jobs, but according to Kowal mayor Eugeniusz Golembiewski, Wika’s long-term plans are even more ambitious and could bring over 1,000 jobs to the area. Under an optimistic scenario, the new plant could start operations already in late 2013. Whether it does will depend on the approach on the Finance Ministry and on the speed of administrative processes.

Founded in 1946, Wika has engineering centres and manufacturing facilities in the United States, Germany, Brazil, China, India, Canada, Poland, Switzerland and South Africa, and employs more than 6,500 people worldwide.
