Danish furniture maker buys factory in Wielkopolskie

Fritz Hansen, a Danish manufacturer of design furniture, has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire an industrial property in Rawicz (Wielkopolskie voivodship) from Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems (SEWS) of Japan, as part of plans to relocate production to Poland, it emerged on 30 July. The company, which already outsources part of its production to a sub-contractor in Poland, plans to create 50 jobs in the town by 2014. In the words of Jacob Holm, General Manager at Fritz Hansen, the country was selected for its large supply of skilled workers, relatively low labour costs, and a well-developed distribution infrastructure.

The property in Rawicz comprises a 8,300 m2 production and warehouse building with social facilities that between 2000 and 2009 housed a SEWS factory and warehouse of automotive wiring components, and a plot of over three hectares on which it is located.

Wojciech Dachniewski of Cushman & Wakefield, which is advising SEWS on the transaction, said that the parties were now waiting to receive all the necessary permits to change the use of the hall, and would then proceed to have the final agreement signed and the ownership transfer completed.

Fritz Hansen was established in 1872. In 2011 the company generated revenues of DKK 433m (approx. €54m).

SEWS, which exited Poland in 2011, used to have two factories in the country, both in Wielkopolskie. The other plant, in Leszno, was earlier this year acquired by another Danish firm, Tom’s, a confectionery group. It is to serve as a packaging centre responsible for the manual packaging of Tom’s products destined for stores and warehouses in Denmark, and might be used for production functions in the future as well.
