Unemployment rate down to 12.4% in June

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.4% at the end of June, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is 0.2 p.p. lower than in May but 0.5 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 1.96 million Poles were registered as unemployed, a decrease of 49,500 in relation to one month earlier and an increase of 81,100 compared with June 2011. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.2%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Zachodniopomorskie (16.7%), Lubuskie (15.1%), Podkarpackie (15%), and Swietokrzyskie (14.8%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.1%), Mazowieckie (10%), Slaskie (10.2%) and Malopolskie (10.5%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a decline in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, to 67,300, down from 74.300 in May and compared to 68,300 in June 2011.

At the end of June, a total of 354 companies were declaring plans to shed 33,000 jobs in the near future, including 9,000 in the public sector. By way of comparison, in the same period of last year the figures were 405 companies and 42,300 jobs, including 29,800 in the public sector.
