Penta to invest €100m in Polish hospital sector

2012-07-25

Penta Investments, the Central European private equity group, announced plans to invest about €100m in hospitals and hospital groups in Poland in the coming years. According to Penta, a combination of benign demographic trends and considerable room for efficiency improvements makes the country’s healthcare sector an attractive area of investment opportunities.

The group is targeting two types of entity: individual public hospitals, both general and specialist ones, with annual National Health Fund (NFZ) contracts of about PLN 40m (€9.6m), as well as groups of smaller entities with combined NFZ contracts of the same size or bigger. Its investments will have a long-term horizon of about 10 years, with a possibility of further involvement depending on the needs of the particular provider. Public-private partnership (PPP) arrangements are not excluded as a possibility. Penta says it guarantees efficient management and development of sought-after specialities, ensuring higher standards and better outcomes in patient care.

Healthcare accounts for about 30% of Penta Investments’ portfolio. In Poland, however, its presence in the medical sector is confined to diagnostic group Alpha Medical and, in contrast to the Czech Republic or Slovakia, does not extend to hospitals or clinics.
