US medical devices group confirms Wroclaw service centre

Becton Dickinson (BD), a NYSE-listed maker of medical devices, supplies, laboratory equipment and diagnostic products, has confirmed that it is preparing to open an advanced shared service centre in Wroclaw later this year. Wim De Jonge, Director of Shared Services Europe, told Puls Biznesu that the city was selected for its good infrastructure, business-friendly local authorities and a large pool of well-trained and motivated staff with excellent command of foreign languages, having beaten off competition from Krakow, Budapest and Vilnius.

The facility is scheduled to start operations in September. It will provide sourcing, HR, data management and customer service support to BD companies in Europe. The group has already hired 15 workers for the Wroclaw unit, with staff levels expected to reach 70 by the end of the year, and possibly to hit the 100 mark shortly thereafter.

Becton Dickinson is active in three areas: medical devices (medical surgical systems, diabetes care, drug delivery systems), diagnostic and preanalytical systems, and cell analysis and discovery labware. It has offices in more than 50 countries worldwide.

BD is not the first healthcare company to announce the opening of a service centre in Poland this year. In March Bayer said it has selected the Tricity area as the site for a business process outsourcing (BPO) centre to serve its operations in Central and Eastern Europe.
