Zabka moves towards 350 new stores target with Zatoka deal

Zabka Polska, the grocery retail group owned by Mid Europa Partners (MEP), plans to add about 350 new stores to its network in the course of 2012, helped by a “store for rent” expansion model, CEO Jacek Roszyk told Puls Biznesu. The comments came as Zabka completed the acquisition of 21 stores in the Tricity area belonging to Zatoka, a local chain whose remaining 12 outlets were sold to Jeronimo Martins/Biedronka.

At present Zabka has 2,500 eponymous convenience stores and 100 Freshmarket supermarkets. The acquired Zatoka stores will operate under the latter brand. Zabka Polska is not buying the stores outright, however. Instead, it is pursuing a “store for rent” model based on 10-year lease agreements with existing owners.
