Unemployment rate down to 12.6% in May


The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.6% at the end of May, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is 0.3 p.p. lower than in April but 0.2 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 2.01 million Poles were registered as unemployed, a decrease of 58,700 in relation to one month earlier and an increase of 51,300 compared with May 2011.

The highest unemployment rates were noted in Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.7%), Zachodniopomorskie (17.3%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (17%), Lubuskie and Podkarpackie (15.3%), and Swietokrzyskie (15.1%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.3%), Mazowieckie (10.3%), Slaskie (10.5%) and Malopolskie (10.7%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a decline in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, to 74,300, down from 74,600 in April and compared to 76,300 in May 2011.

At the end of May a total of 351 companies were declaring plans to shed 31,900 jobs in the near future, including 10,200 in the public sector. By way of comparison, in the same period of last year the figures were 386 companies and 37,100 jobs, including 25,500 in the public sector.

We predict that at the end of 2012 the official jobless rate will amount to 12.9%.
