Retail sales up by 7.7% y-o-y in May


Retail sales at current prices grew by 7.7% y-o-y in May, an acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The figure is slightly better than market expectations, which averaged 7.1% y-o-y.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2011, sales were up in six of the main branch specialisations and lower in two categories. By far the highest increase was noted in sales of furniture, radio, TV and household appliances (up by 22.5% y-o-y), followed by other retail sale in non-specialised stores (up by 13.9% y-o-y), fuels (up by 12.6% y-o-y), and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment (up by 11.7% y-o-y). Sales of motor vehicles, motorcycles and parts went up by 7.2% y-o-y and food, beverages and tobacco products by 5.8% y-o-y. By contrast, sales of textiles, clothing and footwear declined by 2.5% y-o-y and newspapers, books and other sale in specialised stores by 9.7% y-o-y.

In January-May 2012 retail sales at current prices rose by 9.8% y-o-y.
