Poland’s GDP per head rises to 65% of EU average in 2011

2012-06-21

Poland’s GDP per capita (adjusted for purchasing power standards, PPS) reached 65% of the EU average at the end of 2011, up from 62% a year earlier, according to first preliminary estimates by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office. By way of comparison, in 2010 the country’s GDP per capita as a share of the EU average rose by one point while in 2009 by five points.

The result gives Poland 23rd place among the Union’s 27 economies, same as in 2010. The Czech Republic ranked 18th with 80% of the EU27 average, unchanged from the year before; Slovakia came 20th with 73%, down one percentage point; and Hungary ranked 22nd with 66%, up two points.

At the same time, Poland’s Actual Individual Consumption (AIC) per capita, an alternative indicator of countries’ level of welfare that Eurostat says is better adapted to reflect the situation of households, amounted to 70% of the EU27 average in 2011, the same as in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and nine points higher than in Hungary.
