Bilfinger Berger’s Polish turbine foundations JV buys land for €50m plant in Szczecin

KSO, a joint venture of German construction group Bilfinger Berger, Polish steel construction specialist Crist and state-owned investment fund MARS, has reached preliminary agreement to buy 20.9 hectares in Szczecin harbour for a plant to manufacture steel foundations for wind turbines. The value of the project is €50m.

According to earlier information, the facility will employ 400 people when it goes into operation in 2014. It will process 80,000 tons of steel and manufacture foundations for 80 wind turbines a year.

Bilfinger Berger expects the venture to strengthen its leading market position in the installation of foundations on the high seas by giving it extra competitive advantage through deeper vertical integration. At present the group is responsible for about a third of all wind turbines on the North and Baltic seas, regions where it expects continued dynamic demand as countries move to reach climate protection goals.

Bilfinger Berger owns 62.5% of shares in KSO, with Crist holding 25% and MARS 12.5%.
