Manpower: positive but careful hiring intentions for Q3

Companies in Poland remain moderately cautious about adding new jobs as the crisis in the eurozone clouds the near term outlook, according to the latest edition of the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, an international quarterly study by the US employment services group. Some firms are implementing hiring freezes on non-essential positions and there is growing interest in flexible forms of employment, but strong demand will hold up for key staff such as engineers, professionals or skilled workers, the report notes.

The survey shows that 17% Polish firms are planning to add new jobs in the third quarter of 2012, while 7% anticipate job cuts. This compares to 16% and 10%, respectively, in the March study and marks a four-point increase in the balance of employment expectations, to +10 points. Adjusted for seasonal effects, however, the balance is unchanged at +6 points, which represents a decline of four points compared with the same period of 2011. The proportion of firms expecting no changes to employment levels during the coming quarter rose one point to 70%.

Eight of the 10 main economic sectors covered by the study have a positive net employment outlook for Q3 2012, the seasonally-adjusted figures show. Companies in the horeca and construction sectors remain the most bullish, with net balances of +14 and +13 points, respectively. Manufacturers and public sector employers show moderate optimism with balances of +8 and +7 points, followed by retail and wholesale trade at +6, mining and transport, logistics & communication at +5, and finance, insurance, real estate and services at +3 points. The two sectors with a negative outlook are agriculture, forestry and fishing (-6 points) and and energy, gas and water supply (-8 points).

The Polish leg of the survey was conducted between 19 April and 2 May on a representative sample of 750 companies.
