Metsa Tissue, Schattdecor to move ahead with projects after Katowice zone enlargement

2012-06-11

The government has approved a major expansion of the Katowice Special Economic Zone effective from 15 June, thus clearing the way for investment projects by two foreign paper manufacturers and a German-Polish data centre operator.

Thus Metsa Tissue, a Finnish maker of tissue and cooking paper for consumers and professionals, will build a modern, low CO2 factory and a warehouse in Krapkowice (Opolskie voivodship) at a cost of PLN 170m (approx. €39.4m), creating at least 30 new jobs. Schattdecor, a German maker of printed décor paper, will invest over PLN 44m (€10.2m) to expand its factory in Glucholazy (also in Opolskie) in a project expected to generate about 30 new jobs, taking the total to 115. And 3 Services Factory, a joint venture of PCC, a German chemicals-to-energy group, and TKP, a Polish telecom operator active in the Slaskie voivodship, will build a back-up centre in Bytom for its Data Processing Facility in Katowice, in a second phase of a PLN 40m (€9.3m) project that will create one of the largest third-party data centre facilities in Poland.

The government estimates that the expansion of the zone’s area by more than 100 hectares will bring investments of PLN 1.8bn (€417m) and generate about 3,700 new jobs over the next several years.
