CMC drops lay-off plan but denounces collective agreement at Zawiercie plant

CMC Zawiercie, the steel manufacturer owned by Commercial Metals Company of the US, has withdrawn from a plan to cut 330 jobs at its steel works in Zawiercie (Slaskie voivodship) in response to weak demand and rising input costs, trade unions announced on 5 June. Instead the group has walked away from its collective agreement with the unions, which offers longer notice periods, performance and retirement bonuses and other regulations than increase labour costs.

The proposed lay-offs would affect nearly 17% of the plant’s total headcount of over 2,000.
