Fortum in fresh job cuts at CHP plants in Slaskie

Fortum, the Finish power and heat company, plans to cut a total of 90 jobs at EC Zabrze and ZE Bytom, two combined heat and power producers that it bought from the state in January 2011, the group’s spokesman told Polish Press Agency on 31 May.

The lay-offs – which will affect 60 workers at EC Zabrze and 30 at ZE Bytom – represent a second wave of redundancies in a little over a year as Fortum integrates the two companies. In March 2011 the group initiated a programme of voluntary departures aimed at cutting 120 jobs, or 25% of the combined workforce. At EC Zabrze the scheme reduced headcount by over 80, or a third of the total.

According to Forum, the cuts necessary to improve financial performance, lay foundations for future expansion in the Slaskie energy market, and prepare the companies for new investments.
