CMC Zawiercie to axe 330 jobs

CMC Zawiercie, one of the largest steel producers in Poland owned by Commercial Metals Company of the US, has notified trade unions about plans to cut 330 jobs at its steel works in Zawiercie (Slaskie voivodship) in June and July in response to tough market conditions, Polish Press Agency reported on 30 May. The lay-offs would represent nearly 17% of the company’s workforce of over 2,000.

According to trade unions, who are objecting strongly to the scale of the job cuts, CMC Zawiercie is blaming the move on a weak economic outlook, the prospect of recession in the eurozone, fiscal consolidation in Poland and higher gas and energy prices. Loss of market share to what the company describes as dumped imports from Latvia is also said to have played a part.
