LFS unemployment rate up to 10.5% in Q1


The unemployment rate measured according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) amounted to 10.5% in the first quarter of 2012, up by 0.8 p.p. compared with the previous quarter and 0.5 p.p. higher than a year earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

During the analysed period, the total number of people out of work stood at just over 1.88 million, which represented an increase of 133,000 from Q4 and of 112,000 compared with the same period of 2011. Meanwhile, the employment rate amounted to 50.1%, down by 0.7 p.p. in relation to the previous quarter but 0.1 p.p higher than a year earlier. At the same time, the number of economically inactive persons increased by 93,000, or 0.7%, versus the preceding quarter and slightly exceeded 14 million people. As a result, the economic activity rate declined by 0.3 p.p. compared with Q4 2011, to 56%. On a year-on-year basis it increased by 0.4 p.p.
