Dutch fibres maker under pressure over Lodz plant

Enkev, a Dutch manufacturer of natural fibres and non-wovens for the furniture, automotive and other sectors, may have to close down its production operations in Lodz to make way for a city-centre redevelopment scheme, it emerged. About 200 jobs are at stake.

Lodz mayor Hanna Zdanowska has ordered the company to vacate its existing, 20,000 m2 factory building by the end of the year as the city prepares to start the construction of the New Lodz Centre, a large business and entertainment development, and warned that the municipal government would expropriate the plot if the company did not move. The city suggests Enkev could relocate to a former Coca-Cola factory or to its own site in Konstantynow near Lodz. Yet according to Enkev management and unions, the proposed timeframe and conditions are unrealistic and the plant will not survive unless given more time.

Established in 1932, Enkev has operations in the UK, Poland, Russia and France, and a joint venture in China and Sri Lanka. The Lodz plant is one of the largest private employers in the city.
