Poland: Political Update

2000-07-01

Change in the government. Liberty Union (UW) decided to leave the government after several weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with its coalition partner, AWS (NSZZ Solidarity Party). UW withdrew all its five ministers, including the Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Leszek Balcerowicz (who is also the chairman of UW). The Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek (AWS) quickly designated new ministers for all the vacancies, with an exception made only for the Foreign Affairs Minister BronisĹaw Geremek, who remained in office for several weeks longer at the request of Mr. Buzek. Here are the newly-designated ministers:

  • Finance - JarosĹaw Bauc, the former Deputy Finance Minister. Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the chairman of the Polish National Bank, described him as "an economist with healthy economic views"
  • Economy, and the new Deputy Prime Minister - Janusz Steinhoff, who already held the office of the Minister of Economy, was now nominated the post of Deputy Prime Minister.
  • Justice - Lech KaczyĹski.
  • Regional Policy and Housing - Jerzy Kropiwnicki, the previous director of the Government Centre of Strategic Studies.
  • Transport - Jerzy Widzyk, up to this time the director of the Prime Minister's Chancellery
  • Defence - BronisĹaw Komorowski.
