The incumbent, Aleksander KwaĹniewski, won 53.9% of the votes and was elected for a second term. This year’s election proved a major defeat for Krzaklewski, who was supported by only 15.57% of the electorate. JarosĹaw Kalinowski of PSL, fourth in the election with 5.95%, beat Andrzej Lepper, who polled 3.05%, for the peasant vote. National Bank of Poland chairman resigns. Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the current chairman of the Polish central bank, has accepted a post of vice-president at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), in effect resigning from the NBP presidency. She will take up her new post in January 2001. Members of the Monetary Policy Council have said that the change will not have a significant impact on the zĹoty exchange rate. However, there have also been comments that the resignation may increase uncertainty about the economy among foreign investors.
