US battery maker expands Poznan plant

Exide Technologies, a leading global manufacturer and recycler of lead-acid batteries for automotive and specialty applications, on 27 April initiated construction work on a major expansion of its factory of starting batteries in Poznan. The project is worth €36.5m. It will increase the plant’s annual capacity by 40%, or 1.5 million units, which is roughly half the number of batteries replaced in Poland each year, according to the company. The new production facilities will start operations at the beginning of 2013.

Jaroslaw Nadstazik, Marketing Manager for Central and Eastern Europe, says an important consideration in the decision to expand the Poznan plant was that the project was made part of the Kostrzyn-Slubice Special Economic Zone.

NASDAQ-listed Exide Technologies has operations in more than 80 countries worldwide and in fiscal 2011 generated net sales of approximately $2.9bn (€2.2bn).
