Tesco considering adjustments to Polish workforce

Tesco, the UK retail group, has informed trade unions about plans to lay off up to 10% of the workforce at its Polish stores later this year as part of a restructuring programme, the Solidarity union told the media on 26 April. According to Solidarity, the redundancies could affect about 3,000 workers and are likely to take place in May and June.

Michal Sikora, the spokesman for Tesco Polska, confirmed that the group was in the middle of adjusting its operating structure in Poland, a process that might lead to some job cuts at certain locations. He stressed, however, that any numbers were premature and amounted to pure speculation until the completion of an internal review. Mr. Sikora added that the changes would not in any way impede its store opening programme in Poland and that Tesco would continue to expand its network and create new jobs.
