Industrial output up by 0.7% y-o-y in March

Industrial output rose by 0.7% y-o-y in March, a deceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was sharply below market expectations, which averaged 4.7% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2011, output was up in 22 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest growth (up by 2.5% y-o-y) was noted in water supply, waste management and remediation activities, followed by manufacturing (up by 1% y-o-y) and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (up by 0.6% y-o-y). At the same time, in mining-quarrying output declined by 7.5% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, solid increases were reported in chemicals and chemical products (up by 12.4% y-o-y), machinery and equipment (up by 9.6% y-o-y), food products (up by 8.9% y-o-y), electrical equipment (up by 8.3% y-o-y), printing and reproduction of recorded media (up by 7.1% y-o-y), or metal products (up by 6.8% y-o-y).

On the other hand, output in the furniture sector slumped by 11.3% y-o-y, in cars, trailers and semi-trailers by 10.5% y-o-y, in pharmaceuticals by 8.9% y-o-y, in computers, electronic and optical products by 7.4% y-o-y, and in coke and refined petroleum products by 5.5% y-o-y.

In January-March 2012 industrial output rose by 4.9% y-o-y.
