Metsa Tissue, Schattdecor considering investments in Opolskie

Two foreign paper manufacturers are planning major investments in Southern Poland, but for both projects to go ahead, the government has to approve the inclusion of the proposed sites into the Katowice Special Economic Zone (KSSE), Piotr Wojaczek, the zone’s CEO, told Puls Biznesu.

Thus Metsa Tissue, a Finnish maker of tissue and cooking paper for consumers and professionals, has teamed up with Goodman, the international commercial and industrial property group, to build a production hall and warehouse in Krapkowice (Opolskie voivodship) at a cost of PLN 170m (€40.4m). The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Metsa would lease the facilities, creating 30 jobs. The company has already obtained a preliminary approval from the Ministry of the Economy to make the complex part of the Katowice zone.

The other investor is Schattdecor, a German maker of printed decor paper. The group wants to invest PLN 45m (€10.7m) to expand its factory in Glucholazy (also in Opolskie) by erecting a new production and warehousing hall there, in a project expected to yield more than 30 new jobs, taking the total to 115. Schattdecor, which has approximately 1,300 employees at 11 plants across the world, has indicated however that the new operations will be located in Turkey if the plant is not included in the KSSE.
