BIEC: economic climate edges up in March

The Leading Indicator (WWK), which provides information on future trends in the economy, gained one point in March, the Bureau for Investments and Economic Cycles (BIEC) reported. According to the Bureau, despite the small improvement in sentiment, economic growth in Poland still looks set to slow down somewhat in the remainder of 2012, though the overall picture is increasingly one of stabilisation.

Of the eight component indicators of the WWK, four improved compared with February, three deteriorated and one remained unchanged. The biggest positive contributor was household lending, which increased due to inflation and seasonal and currency effects. There was also a slight improvement in manufacturing orders, though there were more companies reporting a decline in orders than those reporting an increase (a difference of three percentage points). On the other hand, companies’ assessments of their own financial health deteriorated, while labour productivity remained stuck at its level a year ago, which according to the BIEC could be one reason why the international competitiveness of Polish products has weakened of late, as illustrated by lower external demand.

The WWK is a prognostic instrument. It is a measure of the current state of economic activity and provides advanced information on upturns and downturns in economic activity in relation to GDP as well as data on production, retail sales, wages and household incomes. The average prognostic timeframe of the WWK index in relation to the actual state of economic affairs ranges from 3 to 12 months, depending on the phase of the economic cycle.
