Retail sales up by 13.7% y-o-y in February


Retail sales at current prices grew by 13.7% y-o-y in February, a slight deceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result is significantly better than a market consensus of 10.4% y-o-y.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2011, sales were up in all of the main branch specialisations except newspapers, books and other items at specialist stores, whose sales declined by 4.8% y-o-y. The highest increase was noted in other retail sale at non-specialised stores, which surged by 33.9% y-o-y, followed by motor vehicles, motorcycles and parts (up by 23.6% y-o-y), fuels (up by 21.6% y-o-y), and furniture, radio, TV and household appliances (up by 20.5% y-o-y). Sales of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment went up by 8.9% y-o-y, sales of food, beverages and tobacco products were up by 7.7% y-o-y, and textiles, clothing and footwear by 4.1% y-o-y.

In January-February 2012 retail sales at current prices rose by 14.2% y-o-y.
