Jabil to axe temp jobs in Kwidzyn

Jabil, the global electronic manufacturing services provider, plans to lay off 600 temporary workers at its manufacturing complex in Kwidzyn (Pomorskie voivodship) in response to lower orders for solar panel modules, the local labour office said. The figure represents about 23% of the plant’s total workforce of 2,600.

The US group is facing a drop in orders for its photovoltaic panels from customers in Germany and France, due to the imminent expiry in these countries of government grants to support solar power (it is competing with cheaper products from China). Jabil has therefore signalled to the labour office that it will have to trim output in Kwidzyn during the next six to nine months. It is not clear whether the problems are temporary. Some observers expect Chinese makers to focus more on their domestic market going forward; and a long-heralded renewable energy bill is expected to create demand for solar home systems in Poland, making the country a significant consuming market for solar panels.

In 2009 Jabil invested PLN 70m (approx. €16.9m) in Kwidzyn to launch production of photovoltaic panels there. The plant also makes TV sets and LCD panels.
