Manpower: outlook for hiring improves ahead of Euro 2012

Polish companies have grown somewhat more optimistic about the outlook for hiring in the next quarter, led by sectors expected to benefit from Euro 2012, and the overall balance edged further into positive territory, almost reversing losses from three months earlier, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, an international quarterly study by the US employment services firm.

The survey shows that 16% Polish firms are planning to add new jobs in the second quarter of 2012, while 10% anticipate job cuts. This compares to 14% and 11%, respectively, in December and marks a three-point increase in the balance of employment expectations, to +6 points. In seasonally-adjusted terms the result is broadly unchanged from three months earlier, however, and on a year-on-year basis it represents a drop of six points. The percentage of firms expecting no changes to employment levels during the coming quarter fell two points to 69%.

Adjusted for seasonal effects, seven of the 10 main economic sectors covered by the study showed a positive net employment outlook for Q2 2012, though in all but three the figures deteriorated compared with December.

Companies in the construction and horeca sectors are the most bullish about the outlook for hiring, with net balances of +18 points and +15 points, respectively, followed by the logistics sector at +11 points. Optimism also prevails in mining (+8 points), wholesale and retail trade (+7 points) and finance, insurance, real estate & business services (+6 points). The balance is also positive in the public sector (+3 points). Three sectors showed a negative outlook: manufacturing (-3 points), agriculture, forestry and fishing, and energy, gas and water supply (-5 points in both cases).

The Polish leg of the survey was conducted between 19 January and 1 February on a representative sample of 750 companies.
