Tesco poised for major network expansion in northern Poland

Tesco plans to significantly increase its footprint in Pomorskie and Zachodniopomorskie voivodships, targeting locations from major cities to small seaside towns, Dariusz Nowaczyk, head of new investments at Tesco Polska, told a conference on property development in northern Poland.

At present the UK retailer has 21 stores in Pomorskie, including 7 hypermarkets, and 11 in Zachodniopomorskie (four hypermarkets). In the words of Mr. Nowaczyk, the group would like to have “many more” outlets in this region and aims to expand its network in this part of the country “not two or three times but by much more than that”. He noted that with its new, smaller retail formats that are being rolled out for the past two years, the group is able to enter localities as small as 5,000 inhabitants, or even resorts with a permanent population of about 3,000 but which attract large numbers of tourists. This latter category in particular appears to be an attractive niche market, Mr. Nowaczyk said.

Tesco has about 420 retail stores in Poland.
