LFS unemployment rate up to 9.7% in Q4


The unemployment rate measured according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) amounted to 9.7% in the fourth quarter of 2011, up by 0.4 p.p. compared with the previous quarter and by a similar amount in relation to a year earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

During the analysed period, the total number of people out of work stood 1.75 million, which represented an increase of 71,000 from Q3 and of 101,000 compared with the same period of 2010. Meanwhile, the employment rate amounted to 50.8% in Q4, down by 0.3 p.p. in relation to the previous quarter but up by 0.2 p.p. versus Q4 2010. At the same time, the number of economically inactive persons increased by 30,000, or 0.2%, and exceeded 13.93 million people. As a result, the economic activity rate declined by 0.1 p.p. compared with Q3, to 56.3%. On a year-on-year basis it increased by 0.5 p.p.
