Industrial output up by 9% y-o-y in January


Industrial output rose by 9% y-o-y in January, an acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was slightly below market expectations, which averaged 9.2% y-o-y.

Compared with the corresponding period of 2011, output was up in 29 (out of 34) industrial sectors. Of the main sectors, the highest growth (up by 10.7% y-o-y) was noted in manufacturing. In water supply, waste management and remediation activities output went up by 6.1% y-o-y. In mining-quarrying production declined by 0.3% y-o-y and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 3.2% y-o-y.

In the case of the country’s manufacturing sub-sectors, particularly strong increases were reported in metal products (up by 25.7% y-o-y), machinery and equipment (up by 18.2% y-o-y), chemicals and chemical products (up by 15.4% y-o-y), and other non-metallic mineral products (up by 15% y-o-y). Production of wood, cork, straw and wicker products grew by 14.2% y-o-y, and output in the rubber and plastic sector rose by 13.7% y-o-y. On the other hand, production of pharmaceuticals declined by 7% y-o-y.

In 2011 industrial output grew by 7.7%.
