Warsaw ranked 21st among European cities of the future

Warsaw ranks fourth among Europe’s major cities for business friendliness and eighth for foreign direct investment (FDI) promotion strategy, according to European Cities and Regions of the Future 2012/2013, an annual report by fDi Magazine, a publication of the Financial Times group. These are among only a handful of top-ten appearances by Eastern European cities in a ranking list otherwise strongly dominated by cities and regions in northern and western Europe. (On business friendliness, Warsaw was bettered only by London, Moscow and Brussels). In the overall ranking of top 25 European cities of the future (regardless of size), Warsaw ranks 21st, right behind Prague. Krakow comes 69th and Katowice 87th.

In the top 25 of cities in Eastern Europe, the Polish capital comes third, behind Moscow and Prague, while Krakow ranks ninth.

Polish cities make up the top three, and half of the top ten, of cities in Eastern Europe with the best FDI promotion strategies. Katowice comes top, followed by Krakow and Lublin, with Warsaw in sixth and Poznan in eighth (four of the remaining six countries are from the Czech Republic). Among Europe’s large cities, Krakow ranks fourth on FDI strategy, behind only UK and German cities, while Poznan comes ninth.

Similarly, four of Eastern Europe’s top ten regions for FDI strategy are Polish (Malopolskie comes top, Opolskie second, Slaskie sixth, and Wielkopolskie tenth). In the overall ranking of top 25 European regions in terms of FDI strategy, Malopolskie comes 17th and Opolskie 22nd.

The rankings are based on an evaluation of cities’ and regions’ performance on six criteria: economic potential, human resources, cost effectiveness, quality of life, infrastructure and business friendliness.
