Smithfield’s Animex closes beef operations in Warminsko-Mazurskie

Animex, the meat producer owned by global food group Smithfield Foods, on 24 January announced the axing of 230 jobs, or just over 20% of the workforce, at its manufacturing complex in Morliny near Ostroda (Warminsko-Mazurskie voivodship).

According to the company, the job cuts are a result of its decision to shut down unprofitable beef operations at the Morliny complex – which include a slaughterhouse and a processing unit – and to concentrate on the production of pork and poultry.

Animex bought the Morliny complex in 2005 from Spain’s Campforio. It employs 1,036 people.

Smithfield Foods sold its main beef-processing business already in 2008. A sale was not an option in the case of Animex because its beef unit is part of a larger production complex.
