Coca-Cola to slash 165 jobs in Lodz

2012-01-08

Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, the world’s second-largest anchor Coca-Cola bottler, on 5 January notified trade unions about plans to axe up to 165 jobs at its plant in Lodz, Polish Press Agency reported. The redundancies represent up to 63% of the factory’s workforce of 260 people, and will affect production, warehouse and support staff.

Coca-Cola says the restructuring is part of wider efforts to boost efficiency, as it is caught between fast-rising materials and operating costs and cash-strapped yet quality-conscious consumers. The process involves a greater concentration of its manufacturing operations and the outsourcing of some activities. Hence the decision to shift part of production from Lodz to other locations, and to appoint an outsourcing partner to manage warehousing operations there.

The Lodz plant started operations in 1993. It accounts for 11.3% of Coca-Cola’s domestic production, including 100% of bottled and carton-boxed juices.

Coca-Cola Polska employs over 3,000 people at four bottling plants, 30 distribution centres and its head office in Warsaw.
