Bayer opts for Poland as location for BPO centre

2012-01-02

Bayer, the German pharma group, has selected Poland over Lithuania and Estonia as the location for a large business process outsourcing (BPO) centre, and has narrowed the field of candidate sites to just two: Wroclaw and the Tricity area, Puls Biznesu has learnt. A delegation of Bayer officials is due to visit Poland in the second half of January, and a final decision could be made within three months, a source close to the process told the newspaper.

In September 2011 there were reports that Bayer was considering four cities in Poland (Poznan and Katowice being the other two) as well as Vilnius and Tallinn as possible locations for a service centre that would provide financial and bookkeeping support to Bayer subsidiaries in Central and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The proposed facility would employ approximately 300 people.

Pharma firms with service centres in Poland include GSK, Roche, or Nycomed, but more are likely to follow, according to the Association of Business Service Leaders in Poland (ABSL), a BPO industry group. The ABSL claims the level of interest among big pharma firms in locating BPO operations in the country is growing. In August 2011 Wroclaw authorities revealed they were in talks with three pharmaceutical companies about opening BPO and research facilities in the city.
