Poland drops to 23rd among world’s top 25 most-trusted FDI locations

Poland slumped by 17 notches to 23rd in the world in a periodic ranking of most-trusted locations for foreign direct investment (FDI) by A.T. Kearney, the management consulting firm. It was the biggest drop among the Index’s top 25 countries, reversing the substantial gains made by Poland over the past five years, i.e. since the outbreak of the global crisis.

In its 2012 A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index report, the company notes that Poland’s slide in the rankings, from sixth place in 2010, reflects a decline in FDI inflows to the country as the glow faded of its strong showing through the global recession. It came amid a 13% drop in FDI inflows into the EU as a whole in 2010. Even so, Poland remains the second-highest ranking CEE country only after Russia (in 12th), and the fourth-highest in the European Union (behind Germany in fifth, Great Britain in eighth and France in 17th).

China tops the 2012 Index, followed by India and Brazil. The United States fell two notches to fourth, illustrating the growing power of emerging markets.

The report concludes that with increasingly uncertain prospects for near-term economic recovery, a quick pick-up in FDI flows is unlikely, and that emerging markets – which already comprise more than half of the Index’s top 25 countries – will benefit disproportionately from any recovery.

The A.T. Kearney FDI Confidence Index is based on a survey of senior executives of the world’s leading corporations representing 27 countries and 17 industry sectors across six continents. The latest study was carried out between July and October 2011. The Index is calculated as a weighted average of responses to questions about the likelihood of direct investment in a market over the next three years.
