Unemployment rate rises to 12.1% in November

2011-12-22

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.1% at the end of November, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is 0.3 p.p. higher than in October and 0.4 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, over 1.91 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 47,400 in relation to one month earlier and of 56,600 versus November 2010. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.4%), Zachodniopomorskie (17%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (16.4%), Podkarpackie (15.2%), Lubuskie and Swietokrzyskie (14.7%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (8.8%), Mazowieckie (9.6%), Slaskie (9.9%) and Malopolskie (10.1%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a significant decline in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices. At the end of November 464 companies were declaring an intention to cut 31,000 jobs (of which 15,000 in the public sector), compared with 445 companies and 46,900 jobs (30,600 in the public sector) a year earlier.

On the other hand, there was a substantial fall in the number of job offers submitted to labour offices. At 44,900 the figure was 18% lower than the month before and 27% lower year-on-year.

We forecast that at the end of 2011 the registered unemployment rate will amount to 12.4%.
