Retail sales up by 12.6% y-o-y in November


Retail sales at current prices grew by 12.6% y-o-y in November, an acceleration compared with the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was better than market expectations, which averaged 10.2% y-o-y.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2010, sales were up in almost all of the main branch specialisations, with the single exception of motor vehicles, motor cycles and parts, where they declined by 5.5% y-o-y. The highest increase was noted in other retail sale at non-specialised stores (up by 29.1% y-o-y) and in fuels (up by 27.1% y-o-y). Robust double-digit growth occurred in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment (up by 16.3% y-o-y), newspapers, books and other items at specialist stores (up by 15.2% y-o-y), and textiles, clothing and footwear (up by 14.7% y-o-y). Sales of furniture, radio, TV and household appliances went up by 6.5% y-o-y, while sales of food, beverages and tobacco products were 4.1% higher than a year earlier.

In the first 11 months of 2011 retail sales at current prices rose by 12.2% y-o-y.
