Jeronimo Martins acquires Zatoka stores


The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) on 16 December gave the go-ahead for Jeronimo Martins (JM), the Portuguese retail group that owns Poland’s number one discount chain Biedronka, to acquire 12 stores in the Tricity area from Zatoka, a grocery retailer with a strong presence on the local market. The transaction covers outlets in Gdansk and Gdynia.

It is JM’s second acquisition in less than a week, after its takeover of nine stores in Mazowieckie and Podlaskie from MarcPol. The Portuguese group already bought some assets from Zatoka in August 2011.

Last month Jeronimo Martins announced that it would spend €1.5bn, i.e. about 70% of its entire capex programme for 2012-2014, on expanding its retail operations in Poland, as part of a plan to increase its store count in the country to 3,000 by 2015. Apart from Biedronka, JM is also testing other store formats on the Polish market, notably Hebe, a mass-market drugstore.

As of September 2011 the Biedronka chain consisted of 1,756 stores, giving it about 11% of the Polish food retail market.
