Polish manufacturers display highest confidence in EU

2011-12-09

Sentiment in Poland’s manufacturing sector has deteriorated in recent months but Polish manufacturers remain comparatively confident about near-term prospects, with the sector’s twelve-month outlook for business activity at a higher level than in any other EU country, according to the winter edition of Global Business Outlook Survey, a thrice-yearly report from KPMG. The study shows global business confidence at its lowest level since global data were first available in October 2009.

The percent balance of manufacturing firms in Poland predicting activity growth during the next 12 months – i.e. the proportion of companies expecting an increase in activity less those expecting a decrease – stood at +47.7 points in winter 2011, down from +57 points in June and the lowest level since June 2010. However, just one country has a higher balance (India, +48.5 points). The global average plunged to +27.3 points from +45.5 in June, and the EU average by more than 20 points to +15.4.

Expectations for new orders and revenue growth remained in positive territory, despite falling by more than 10 points to below +40 points. Furthermore, the outlook for employment remained at a four-and-a-half year high of +25.6 points, compared with an EU average of -0.3 and higher than in any other country covered by the study. Expectations about R&D expenditure rose by over 10 points to +25.6 points, the highest level since summer 2010. The outlook for capital expenditure fell by just under six points to +25.6.

The report is based on a survey of around 11,000 manufacturers and service providers in the following countries: the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Austria*, the Netherlands*, Greece*, the Czech Republic*, Poland*, Brazil, Russia, India and China (* manufacturers only).

The latest data were collected between 12 and 27 October.
