Metsa Tissue announces closure of paper mill near Warsaw

2011-12-05

Metsa Tissue, a Finnish maker of tissue and cooking paper, on 2 December announced that it would close its manufacturing, converting and warehousing operations at its mill in Konstancin-Jeziorna near Warsaw in April 2012, cutting up to 140 jobs. An ongoing expansion of the group’s second Polish mill in southern Poland will not be affected, however.

In a statement, Metsa said one of the main reasons for the closure of the Konstancin mill was that its obsolete infrastructure would have required significant investments and would have been unsustainable for the company. The group is still considering whether to maintain converting and warehousing operations at the site. The alternative is to rezone it for residential development.

In April 2011 Metsa Tissue announced an investment of €55m to build a second production facility in Krapkowice (Opolskie voivodship), to be completed by mid-2013.
