MAN axes 260 temp jobs at Starachowice plant

MAN, the German bus and truck maker, is cutting 260 temporary jobs at its bus factory in Starachowice (Swietokrzyskie voivodship) effective from 1 December, due to a seasonal drop in orders, Marta Stefanska, a spokeswoman for MAN Polska, told Rzeczpospolita.

The 260 temp workers were hired in the spring.

There is a possibility that some temporary jobs will be added in spring of 2012, Ms. Stefanska noted.

According to the newspaper, an important factor in MAN’s decision not to renew the workers' contracts was resistance on the part of its permanent staff to agree to a more flexible working schedule that would allow the firm to adjust output to orders more quickly.

On 29 August MAN launched a new production line in Starachowice for making frames for premium city buses in an investment worth €3.5m.
