Inflation quickens to 4.3% y-o-y in October


The consumer price index (CPI) amounted to 4.3% y-o-y in October, an acceleration compared with the previous month, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. The figure was higher than market expectations, which averaged 4% y-o-y.

The highest price increase in the 12 months to October was recorded in transport, a category that includes car fuel (up by 9.1% y-o-y), followed by housing and energy (up by 6.7% y-o-y) and education (up by 5% y-o-y). Above-average price growth was also noted in hotels and restaurants (up by 4.4% y-o-y). In alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, as well as in food and non-alcoholic beverages, prices went up by 4.1% y-o-y, and in health by 4% y-o-y. Anaemic price growth occurred in communication (up by 1% y-o-y) and in recreation and culture (up by 0.8% y-o-y). There was one category where prices declined compared with a year earlier, namely clothing and footwear (down by 1.6% y-o-y).

On a month-on-month basis the CPI was 0.7% in September.

In the first 10 months of the year consumer prices rose by 4.2% y-o-y.
