Unemployment rate at 11.8% in September

The registered unemployment rate stood at 11.8% at the end of September, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is unchanged from August but 0.3 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 1.86 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 6,400 in relation to one month earlier and of 49,100 versus September 2010. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (18.7%), Zachodniopomorskie (16.4%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (15.9%), Podkarpackie (14.8%), Swietokrzyskie (14.5%) and Lubuskie (14.3%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (8.6%), Mazowieckie (9.5%), Slaskie (9.6%) and Malopolskie (9.9%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a significant decline in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices, in both monthly and yearly terms. At the end of September 465 companies were declaring an intention to cut 31,700 jobs (of which 17,900 in the public sector). This compares to 434 companies and 37,300 jobs (23,600 in the public sector) at the end of August. On a year-on-year basis the drop was even steeper, from 43,900 jobs (26,000 in the public sector) announced by 522 companies.

On the other hand, there was a substantial fall in the number of job offers submitted to labour offices. At 69,000 the September figure was 5% lower than in August and 30% lower than a year earlier.

We forecast that by the end of 2011 the registered unemployment rate will increase to 12.4%.
