PPI accelerates further to 8.1% y-o-y in September

The producer price index (PPI) amounted to 8.1% y-o-y in September, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced. The figure is higher than a market consensus of 7.3% y-o-y.

Of Poland’s main industrial sectors, by far the steepest price increase (up by 14.3% y-o-y) occurred in mining-quarrying. In the three other main sectors price growth was in the single digits. Thus prices in manufacturing climbed by 8.3% y-o-y, in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities they went up by 4.8% y-o-y, and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply the PPI amounted to 4% y-o-y.

On a month-on-month basis the PPI was 1.4% in September.

In the first nine months of 2011 producer prices jumped by 7.2% y-o-y. Despite the high world prices of fuel and commodities, whose impact on inflation in Poland is being compounded by a substantial weakening of the zloty against the US dollar, we expect the PPI to ease slightly by the end of the year, mainly due to a rising comparative base. According to our forecasts, in 2011 as a whole average annualised PPI inflation will amount to 6.8%.
