Governing party wins election

The ruling Civic Platform (PO) party triumphed in the parliamentary elections held on 9 October, garnering nearly 39% of the votes cast and decisively beating the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, which got just over 30%, preliminary data from 93% of polling stations suggest. Its projected margin of victory – as well as the level of support for the other parties – means the PO is set to form the new government, most likely in coalition with the same junior partner, the Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL), which also made a relatively good showing (8.6%). The Civic Platform will go down in history as the first governing party since Poland’s transition to democracy in 1989 to win two consecutive elections.

Two other parties cleared the 5% threshold needed to gain seats in the Sejm, the partial figures indicate: the Palikot Movement (RP), a new pro-market party set up by former PO politician Janusz Palikot, which received over 9.9%; and the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) on 8.2%.

Voter turnout was 48.6%, lower than four years ago but respectable by Polish standards.
