Survey: manufacturing, construction firms most optimistic about 2012

More than 50% of Polish firms expect their situation to remain unchanged during the period to mid-2012 and a quarter anticipate an improvement, whereas just 9% predict their condition will deteriorate, according to a survey of over 2,000 companies and public-sector entities by the Business Centre Club (BCC) and GfK Polonia. According to Witold Michalek, an expert at the BCC, the results point to a relatively high level of confidence among Polish firms that may be partly helped by insufficient attention to emerging risks.

The level of optimism varies according to sector, the study shows. The most upbeat moods prevailed in manufacturing, where 31% of the surveyed companies said their performance would improve, and in construction, where 28% held a similar view. In services the figure was 26% and in trade, 24%. At the other end of the scale was the public sector, where just 16% of the surveyed entities took a positive view of the future, while 13% anticipated a deterioration, more than in any other sector.

In terms of company size, small and medium-sized enterprises are the most optimistic, with 27% expecting an improvement, compared with 23% for large firms. At the same time, the number of pessimists among big companies was lower than in any other category, at only 7%.

Geographically, the biggest share of optimists was registered in the south and the Silesia region (27%).

The level of optimism also correlated positively with territorial scope of operations, with companies operating nationally or internationally being more confident that those serving only their local market.

The survey is based on face-to-face interviews with a quota sample of 2,000 companies and public-sector entities, conducted in the first half of 2011.
