Fiat cuts temp staff in Tychy

Fiat announced that it would lay off 435 temporary workers at its factory in Tychy (Slaskie voivodship) at the beginning of October, amid a "significant" fall in orders from foreign markets. The redundancies represent about 7% of the factory’s direct workforce of just under 6,000.

The company will also have two non-production days in October to adjust to lower orders (a similar two-day halt was implemented in September).

Exports account for nearly 98% of output at the Tychy plant, which makes Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, Lancia Ypsilon, and Ford Ka. In 2010 it put out more than 533,000 vehicles. In 2011 the figure is expected to be 470,000-480,000, according to an updated forecast.
